Six persons, including a 21-year-old house help, were arrested for trying to kidnap a 10-year-old son of a businessman outside his house at Paranjpe colony in Vile Parle (East) on Friday afternoon.
According to the Vile Parle police, the househelp and her friend Rohit Padmakar Divakar, 27, had hatched the plan to kidnap the boy for a ransom of Rs1 crore.
The help stepped out of the house with the boy on the pretext of getting air filled in the child’s bicycle tyre, the police said
Meanwhile, Divakar was waiting nearby on his bike, with the other accused, Laxman Waradkar alias Milind, who was driving an SUV — Mahindra Xylo.
The help and the victim were standing on the road, when Divakar suddenly picked him and pushed him inside the Xylo. He then abandoned his bike, and fled from the scene.
To avoid suspicion, the woman started to cry for help and informed a policeman that the boy had been kidnapped.
According to the police, the accused had planned to abandon the SUV, and then travel in a Tata Indigo, which was following them.
The other occupants of the Indigo included Divakar’s friends Bhagyesh Balan, 27, Satyajeet alias Robert Balkrishna, 33, and Prem Prakash Gupta, 25.
When they hit the Western Express Highway, Divakar transferred the boy into the Tata Indigo. The accused then called the boy’s mother and demanded a ransom of Rs. 1 crore before settling for a sum of Rs70 lakh.
In the meantime, the police machinery had set up road blocks to check for both vehicles.
When the help informed them that a case had been registered, the accused panicked and abandoned Indigo and the boy on the highway near Goregaon (East).
Divakar and Waradkar were caught at a checkpost near JVLR. During questioning, the two broke down and told the police about the househelp’s involvement. The police arrested Balan and Balkrishna from Malad and Gupta from Andheri based on their cellphone locations.
