Khatate was posted at MG Road in Kandivli (West) with another constable, Jayesh Dhurat. Around 4am, they saw an autorickshaw taking a U-turn. Sensing something suspicious, Khatate asked the driver to stop. On questioning the two passengers, the policemen realised that the duo was in an inebriated state. They told the policemen that they were looking for a wine shop and were coming from Film City in Goregaon (East).

“On searching the duo, we realised that each of them was carrying a hacksaw and a beer bottle. As Dhurat told the duo that they look like thieves, one of them, Sachin Malhotra, 22, broke the beer bottle and hit me on the head with it. The other passenger fled while Dhurat tried to chase him,” said Khatate.

Though injured, Khatate started chasing Malhotra, who had started running along the road. Malhotra tripped and fell over a rock in an open ground, after which Khatate pinned him down. Watchmen from the neighbouring buildings rushed to help the constable. They then handed over Malhotra was handed over to the Kandivli police and took Khatate to the Bhagwati hospital. He was later shifted to Surana hospital in Malad (West).

“He was semi-conscious when he was brought to the hospital. He has a deep gash on the right side of his face and right shoulder. His condition is stable and he will be undergo a one and a cosmetic surgery on Friday,” said Afzal Shaikh, vice president, Surana group of hospitals.

He will undergo cosmetic surgery on Friday.

The police said that Malhotra and his accomplice have been booked for attempt to murder and assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty. Malhotra works as a spot boy in films and is a history-sheeter with at least eight cases, mostly of burglaries, registered against him at various police stations in the city. He was also externed from the city in the past.

“It is incredible how Khatate managed to catch the accused despite being so badly injured. Though we were very worried initially, we are very proud of him,” said SS Khedekar, 49, Khatate’s brother-in-law.
