Airport security authorities have increased deployment and patrolling outside the Mumbai airport’s domestic and international terminals acting on a “general alert” from the Mumbai police on Sunday.

The alert was sounded in the wake of the twin blasts in Hyderabad on February 21 that killed 17 people and injured more than 100.

Sources in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) said that manpower at watch-booths set up around 100 metres before the terminals, was increased and its quick response teams (QRT) were briefed to be extra vigilant in the area which comprises taxi stands, parking lots and food courts.

“The police asked us to step up security outside the airport terminal as the area is under our surveillance and witnesses massive passenger movement,” said a senior CISF personnel, requesting anonymity.

Security arrangements within the terminal and on the airfield, however, remained unchanged, as there was no specific alert from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).

Sources said that manpower at watch-booths was increased so that more vehicles entering the airport premises could be checked.

Usually these vehicles are randomly checked because the city airport being the second busiest in the country, 100% checking of vehicles is manually impossible.

“According to the alert from the police, all metro cities including Mumbai, were required to beef up security. We are following the protocol as per the standard operating procedure (SOP),” the CISF personnel said.
