The city experienced the second hottest March day in five years on Tuesday with the maximum temperature in the suburbs touching 39.5 degrees Celsius, a good 6.7 degrees above normal.

Last year, the city touched the same temperature on March 25. Tuesday’s maximum temperature was also the third highest in a decade.

South Mumbai, too, witnessed rising mercury levels with maximum temperature at 37.5 degrees Celsius, 6.3 degrees above normal.

Minimum temperatures recorded in the city haven’t shown much of a change from Monday. While Santacruz recorded a minimum temperature of 15.6 degrees Celsius, 4.2 degrees below normal, it was 22 degrees Celsius (0.4 below normal) in Colaba.

“Anti-cyclone phenomenon continues over the north-east Arabian Sea adjoining Maharashtra and Gujarat coast. However, it is showing signs of diffusion; it has dropped to level two from level three,” said VK Rajeev, director, western region, India Meteorological Department, adding that the hot conditions in the city will last for a day or two.

An anti-cyclone is an area with high atmospheric pressure where the winds flow in the clockwise direction in the northern hemisphere and in the anti-clockwise direction in the southern hemisphere.

As a result, the solar radiation getting into the earth’s surface does not allowing warm air to escape into the atmosphere that results in temperature rise.

The weather department has forecast a maximum temperature of 39 degree Celsius and a minimum temperature of 15 degree Celsius on Wednesday.
