Alleging that Delhi traffic police were harassing them and giving three punishments for one traffic violation, several autorickshaw unions have threatened to stop running autorickshaws after 4pm.

The move is likely to affect thousands of office-goers, especially women who depend on them to travel after evening.

“From March 1, we will not ply autorickshaws after 4pm. We have been trying to meet the transport minister, senior traffic police officers and the L-G, but they are not interested in listening to us. We will sit a dharna outside the L-G secretariat from March 1,” Delhi Mazdoor Mahasangh spokesman Rajendra Soni said.

The association controls more than 50% of the 70,000 autorickshaws in the Capital.

The auto drivers alleged that their vehicles are impounded for 15-20 days and they are penalised anything between R5,000 to R25,000 for a minor offence such as not wearing the public service badge.

The unions have been at loggerheads with the government for almost six months now. The unions complain that the government has gone back on its promise of increasing the fares since 2013 is an election year. They have also been protesting against the government orders of making installation of “costly but faulty” GPS devices in all autorickshaws mandatory.
