A 73-year-old criminal lawyer-cum-auto lifter extraordinaire, who was first arrested two years ago for his involvement in 89 cases of motor vehicle theft, was nabbed yet again. This time, his criminal tally has gone up by three more cases.

Identified as Dhani Ram Mittal, the senior citizen thief was nabbed on February 7 at a checkpoint near the toll-tax booth at Narela when he failed to produce relevant documents to prove the ownership of the car he was driving.

“When he was questioned in this regard, he threatened the police staff by saying that he is a senior citizen, that they shouldn’t have dared to stop a senior citizen’s vehicle and that he would get them suspended from service for this,” said BS Jaiswal, deputy commissioner of police (outer).

However, the policemen insisted that they let them check the ownership of the vehicle, it was found to have been stolen from north Delhi’s Civil Lines.

What followed was a brief check on Mittal’s identity which blew the lid off the fact that he was involved in as many as 92 cases of cheating, forgery and motor vehicle theft.

Two fake number plates recovered from the boot of the car he was driving were the icing on the cake.

“During the interrogation, he told us that his modus operandi consisted of parking his car near another car for the purpose of stealing it. He starts the target car by a master key and, if caught red handed, then he would start feeling sorry and claims to have done it by mistake on the pretext of his old age,” DCP Jaiswal said.

Mittal was last arrested on March 14, 2011, with 89 involvements in stealing of vehicles to his (dis)credit. He is a qualified criminal lawyer who passed his BSc. with first class and holds a diploma in handwriting and graphology.
