The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will soon start construction of 30,000 new flats in the Capital. These new flats will mostly be in the economically weaker section (EWS) and low income group (LIG) categories.
The country's biggest land development agency plans to build one lakh houses in the LIG and EWS categories every year. Work on more than 23,000 such flats is at an advanced stage and the process has begun for 30,000 more flats.
These flats are located in areas such as Dwarka, Narela and Rohini and their construction is expected to get completed in the next two years. "Work on this new lot of flats is in the planning and tendering stage. The previous batch of 23,000 flats should be ready by this year," said a senior DDA official who didn't wish to be named.
The DDA budget, which will be presented next month, is expected to focus on EWS flats.
"By next year, we would have an inventory of nearly one lakh flats that includes flats built in both the conventional manner and pre-fabricated flats, apart from in situ development at slum clusters," the official said. "We are also trying to develop housing in small pockets of land available in existing DDA colonies," he said.
The DDA is constructing 1,400 new higher income group (HIG) in Dwarka.
According to sources, DDA vice-chairman SK Srivastava had ordered faster completion and of EWS flats. The average range of plinth area of an EWS flat is between 20 and 25 square metres, that of a two-bedroom flat could be between 60 and 110 square metres and that of a three-bedroom house is between 120 and 180 square metres.
