Students who were denied promotion to the next year in Delhi University because of attendance issues can breathe easy. The university has, as a one-time measure, announced that they will be promoted.

This notification includes students who were unable to sit for exams, those whose results were not declared despite writing exams due to low attendance and those who were not promoted after getting the results due to low attendance.

According to university officials, this decision was taken because a number of students had not been informed of the low attendance on time.  The university rules state that in case students have low attendance, they have to be informed five days before the preparatory leave begins. However, these rules were not followed in many of the cases.

Hindustan Times had reported a case in December last year where Dyal Singh College came out with a list of detained students. The list came twenty eight days after the classes were dispersed, ahead of the semester exams and a week after students of B. Com (Ist semester) finished their exams.

This was not the first time that the college had detained students after they had written the exam. In May last year, a similar case had come to light where a student was detained after he had already given his first exam. He had to rush to the court to get a stay on the college's decision.

The university, meanwhile, has also written to the principals of all colleges to remind them of the rules. It said the teachers have to upload the monthly attendance on the college's website and notice board. Students falling short of attendance will have to be informed five days before the vacations begin.

The university said that those teachers who do not comply with the order will be reported to the executive council for necessary action.
