A 23-year-old woman has lodged a police complaint, accusing her brother-in-law of raping her twice over the past few months.
The woman told policemen at northeast Delhi’s Mansarovar Park police station that her brother-in-law had threatened her with a knife before raping her.
The accused, Saurav Kumar, was arrested soon after her complaint. He was produced at a city court that sent him to jail.
The woman got married to a resident of Karawal Nagar in June 2012. At the time of the wedding, she was told that her husband had no siblings.
Later, however, she learnt that he indeed have an elder brother who was in Tihar jail. “Saurav was released on bail a few months ago. He began living at his brother’s home,” said a police officer quoting the complaint of the woman.
Saurav raped the woman in November and December last year, her complaint says. She told her mother-in-law and her husband about the incidents. But instead of doing anything about it, they asked her not to tell anyone about it, as the family’s pride was at stake.
When the woman’s mother came visiting her recently, she found that the 23-year-old was being harassed by her in-laws. She took her back home and, after some prodding, found that her daughter had been raped.
“The woman’s parents approached senior police officers and on their instructions, a case was registered. The medical examination of the woman confirmed rape and Saurav was arrested,” added the senior officer.
