Delhiites are not as heartless as last month’s shocking gang rape made them out to be.

Acid attack victim Reenu Sharma’s heart-wrenching story on January 14 moved a dozen readers to offer money to do everything possible to get her vision back.

Fortis Healthcare, which is running a helpline for gender-assault victims, was the first to offer her free consultation, evaluation and diagnostic tests to assess what can be done to get her vision back.

“We spoke to her today and were told the acid has fused her eyelids shut. We need to first separate the eyelids and then evaluate the condition of her inner eye,” said Dr Sanjay Dhawan, head, department of ophthalmology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon, who will examine Sharma on Tuesday.

Usually, separating fused eyelids needs surgery. “It will be possible for me to tell the next course of action only after I examine her,” said Dr Dhawan.
Several readers called with offers to fund her treatment, some even asking for her bank account number to transfer money. Doctors, however, said a rough estimate of the cost of treatment will be available only after her eyes are evaluated.
