The dreaded gun culture of western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana seems to be fast spreading its web in the national capital. And an indication of this is the recent seizure of 20 sophisticated guns in Delhi last week.

In 2012, the police seized 586 illegal guns, the highest in five years. Officers said what surprised them was the superior quality of the guns.

Police sources estimate that around 100 such weapons make their way to the capital every month.

"Sophisticated country-made pistols are easily available. Stringent licensing norms have led many to take the illegal route to get guns," a senior officer said.

The police issue nearly 1,000 gun licences a year and reject almost the same number of requests.

Guns are sold illegally with the help of a nexus, which relies heavily on references and requires members to never sell guns to strangers.

"Anyone wanting to buy a country-made pistol needs to get in touch with someone who already owns illegal weapons. Cartridges will also be sold through this contact. This appears to be an organised nexus, and we need to depend on chinks in the racket to nab those involved," the officer added.

In 2012, the police arrested 1,191 persons under the arms act and found 586 guns and 2,425 rounds of ammunition on them. Worried, the force has begun an analysis of firearms and ammunitions they have found in the recent past.

"Officers were asked to fill out forms after arms hauls.  An analysis of the data pointed to about 20 gangs who supplied arms produced at a Munger factory," the officer added.

"Last year, we had busted two manufacturing units in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, and Munger, Bihar," the officer added.
