Delhi Metro’s first corridor in phase 3 — the Central Secretariat-Mandi House stretch via Janpath — will become operational by March next year.

To decongest Rajiv Chowk station, Delhi Metro has been working on a war footing to complete civil construction on the three-km-long underground stretch at least six months ahead of schedule.

“At least 75% of construction work on the stretch (part of Central Secretariat-Kashmere Gate corridor) has been completed. We have targeted to make the line operational by March next year,” said Mangu Singh, chief of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The stretch was scheduled to be commissioned in October, 2014.

Operation of this line would shift about 1.5 lakh interchange passengers from Rajiv Chowk to Central Secretariat and Mandi House interchange stations.

“This line would cater to 72,000 and 69,000 passengers at the Central Secretariat and Mandi House interchange stations and decongest Rajiv Chowk,” said Anuj Dayal, DMRC spokesperson. Rajiv Chowk registers an average footfall of five lakh commuters every day.

The decongestion will be achieved by linking two nearby stations — Central Secretariat and Mandi House.

Once they become interchange stations, Janpath and Mandi House will cater to nearly 9,000 and 6,000 daily commuters respectively, said Dayal.

Delhi Metro is close to set a record by completing the civil works at Janpath underground station in a short span of time. Most of the civil work on the station has been finished in a record 17 months’ period.

Tunneling work for both up-line and down-line tunnels from Central Secretariat to Janpath is complete while that between Mandi House and Janpath is in progress.
