Property registration to go electronic in the Capital

In less than two months, registration of property for those in south Delhi will be made a lot easier. No longer will people have to face harassment as the revenue department is going to introduce electronic registration system of sale deeds of properties to streamline the entire system.


To start from Mehrauli sub-registrar office in south Delhi, which covers a large part of south Delhi, buyers will now be able to take online appointment for registration of sale deed of the property they buy, download the format of the sale deed and complete the formality – all in one day without standing in queues or jostling with hundreds of others applicants.

“On the basis of the success or failure of this system, we will replicate it in the rest of Delhi. At present, we have 13 sub-registrar offices in Delhi. We are increasing the number to 27 and will try and make this facility available at 6-7 new offices by this December,” secretary (revenue) Vijay Dev said.

Dev said downloadable formats of registration of sale deeds, will, general power of attorney and other documents will be available on the department’s website. “There will be a section of FAQs where we will explain the entire process of registration of documents. We are also making the sub-registrar office access-controlled so that only those who have been called to sign documents and execute registration will be allowed in our office,” Dev said.

To make the system more user-friendly, Dev added that the government is trying to digitise records of each property in the Capital so that the buyer knows the status of the property before finalising a deal.

“We are trying to introduce property titling system where each property in Delhi will be given a unique number. The buyer will be able to check the status of the property to save from being fooled. We sent the bill to the ministry of home affairs some time back. The ministry has raised some technical issues, which we are trying to rectify. We have sent the clarifications to the law department and will send it to the home ministry,” Dev said.
