In a relief to small and medium hotel owners under the jurisdiction of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, the civic body has waived off tax dues on a hiked portion of property tax.

The decision was taken after representatives of the Delhi Hotel Mahasangh met the officials and leaders of the ruling BJP at the civic centre on Friday.

“They came and explained their point. So even though they will pay 1 per cent from now on, the earlier due because of the hike is being waived,” Mahender Nagpal, Leader of the House (north corporation), said.

The earlier rate, which was 0.7%, was revised by a hardship committee in 2004 to 1% by the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on semi-kaccha as well as tukri garter buildings, but was never implemented.

However, many small and medium hotel owners in north Delhi had got notices to pay around Rs. 10-20 lakh in the form of property tax, citing nine year dues of the hiked portion along with fines and interest. These have now been waived off.
