Three people, including a police constable, suffered minor injuries when an errant truck driver in his bid to escape after injuring the policeman in outer Delhi's Alipur, hit four more vehicles on outer ring road in Burari in north Delhi, on Saturday night.
According to police, the truck caught fire after a biker reportedly on the instructions of police personnel tried to stop it and was hit by it in the process. The motorcycle skidded under the truck, after which it caught fire and the blaze eventually engulfed the truck.
Police said the truck driver was driving in a reckless manner when it was spotted by police personnel manning a check-post in Alipur area around 9.30 pm. The police personnel, a senior police officer said, signalled the truck driver to stop the truck, bearing a Haryana registration.
Instead of stopping his vehicle, the driver accelerated and hit one of the policemen, identified as Pankaj. Other police personnel started chasing the vehicle and after around three kilometres, the truck hit an auto rickshaw in Burari before ramming two cars.
A motorcyclist overtook the truck and tried to stop it. But the truck driver rammed his vehicle into the bike. "Due to the impact, the motorcyclist fell off his motorcycle, which got entangled with the front portion of the truck," said the senior officer. The vehicles caught fire due to which the truck driver had to stop the truck.
Fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was put out. The errant driver fled while the injured were rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram hospital, where they were declared stable. A case has been registered.
