A 28-year-old woman from Assam had a narrow escape on Tuesday night as she managed to fight off an unidentified car driver who tried to kidnap her in southeast Delhi’s Kalkaji.

The woman was returning to her rented accommodation in Kalkaji after shopping in the local market when the man, on the pretext of seeking help from her, dragged her inside his car near Kalkaji market roundabout, police said.

After pulling her inside his car, the police said, the abductor threatened her with dire consequences and rubbed something on her hand. He tried to force himself upon her but she managed to get out of the car and escape.

The matter came to light around 8.30pm after the woman’s male friend called the PCR and claimed she was abducted by someone near Kalkaji market roundabout.

“We contacted the caller who told us that he was not with his friend at that time. She was in a state of shock after the incident and had only managed to narrate the incident to him. Since she was not in a position to make the PCR call herself, her friend made the call,” the officer said.

A police officer said a case of wrongful confinement and molestation was registered at Kalkaji police station on the basis of the complaint filed by the woman. Police are now looking for the car and its driver.

When the victim was approached to record her statement and file a formal complaint, she told the police that she came to Delhi from Assam a few months ago in search of a job.

“On Tuesday night, she was walking back home after shopping when a car, coming from behind, stopped near her. The driver told her that he was injured and needed first-aid. She ignored him and continued walking. The car driver followed her and then dragged her inside his car at an isolated spot,” added the officer.
