After battling for life for nearly three months, the 23-year-old acid attack victim of Puducherry succumbed to her injuries at a Chennai hospital on Tuesday.

Two days after Diwali last year, J Vinodhini, an employee at a software company in Chennai, was attacked with acid by her neighbour, Suresh at Karaikkal in Puducherry, after she spurned his romantic proposal. She was visiting home during the Diwali holidays.

Vinodhini, who lost her vision and suffered severe neck injuries, was rushed to JIPMER in Puducherry and later shifted to a Chennai hospital for extensive surgeries.

According to the hospital authorities, she suffered a cardio respiratory attack on Tuesday morning. Plastic surgeon V Jayaraman, who treated her, said she suffered a sudden setback.

"We did our best, but she had a cardiac arrest. We tried to revive her twice but the extensive damage to her respiratory tract affected her breathing," Jayaraman said.

An inconsolable father, Jayapal, told HT, "She was our family's first graduate and had just got a good job offer. Suresh and his associates should receive the highest punishment possible."

Suresh and his three friends have been arrested and charged with attempt to murder. They will now be tried for murder, said police.
