Three students of the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, have not allowed their electronics education to go up in smoke.

They have created an electronic variety of cigarettes, to be priced at Rs. 200 a stick, to help smokers escape the negative effects of nicotine.

The three — Gaurav Barwalia, Avijeet Kumar Singh and Prashant Ranjan Mahto — are students of electronics and electrical engineering and achieved their feat in the summer of their first year.

Doctors at the institute have declared them much less harmful than common cigarettes. However, they deliver the experience of smoking.

Gaurav said, “We were very interested in the subject because of its contemporary relevance and its potential to save human lives. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has called e-cigarettes an effective nicotine-replacement therapy.”

Avijeet said, “We wanted to keep it affordable and hence have used chemicals other than those found in Chinese e-cigarettes. But we have maintained quality.”

Prashant added, “Though we have not been able to take this project ahead commercially due to academic pressure, we will do so.”
