As a homemaker and mother of two sons, Kalpana Murmu is quite happy to stand in the background and let her more-famous husband hog the limelight. But as the wife of Jharkhand’s new chief minister, avoiding the spotlight is no longer possible for Kalpana.
Meet the better half of Hemant Soren, who was sworn in as the ninth chief minister of the state on Saturday.
Quite happy to shed her relative anonymity, a visibly happy Kalpana exuded confidence that her husband will give Jharkhand a new direction.
“He is determined and I am sure Hemant would change things and work in the best interests of the people,” said Kalpana, who sat on the front row with younger son on her lap during the swearing in ceremony at the Raj Bhavan.
Kalpana beamed with pride as his husband took the oath of office as the new chief minister.
She, as a citizen, had a message for the new chief minister – “please do something for the women and deprived class of the society and give them protection.
“I being a lady should seek something for the women folk,” she said.
Kalpana, a graduate in electrical engineering and PG diploma in Human Resources, also laid stress on improving the education system. “Something is absolutely wrong, the government should focus on education, health and basic amenities required for a citizen,” she said.
“I told him and he has assured me that my concerns would be taken due care of,” she summed up.
