Lightning kills five, injures three in Jharkhand

Five farmers were killed and three others suffered serious burn injuries when lightning struck them while they were working in their fields in Godda district, around 370 kilometers from the state capital Ranchi on Monday afternoon.


The death of five farmers in Godda district has added to the number of increasing deaths due to lightning in Jharkhand.

According to police eight people including the five deceased were working in their fields at Biranchal village under Meharma police station limits, around 80 kilometers from Godda district headquarter when lightning struck them.

The deceased have been identified as Sanjay Yadav, Md. Sammem, Chanu Roy, Jyotis Mandal and Ram Swaroop Yadav. According to the locals the injured are being treated by a village quack.

In the last three months around 20 people have reportedly lost their lives across the state due to lightning.

In the month of April, 30 people had suffered serious injuries and 6 were reported killed due to lightning

As per  state government records, around 900 people have died due to lightning in the past six years.

Nine districts -- Palamu, Chatra, Latehar, Koderma, Ranchi, Giridih, Hazaribag, Lohardaga and Dumka -- are considered to be the most lightning-prone districts.
