A city court on Thursday sentenced a 98-year-old woman to life imprisonment in a 16-year-old murder case. Her son was also convicted.

Assistant district administrative advocate Jagmohan Sharma said Phoolvati, 98, and her son Satbir, both residents of Ramgarh village under Dadri police station, were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of one Balakram, a resident of the same locality.

On December 6, 1996, Phoolvati, her husband Charandas and son Satbir had murdered Balakram by setting him on fire. They had tied him to a cot, sprinkled kerosene on him and set him ablaze. The victim succumbed to his injuries at MMG government hospital during treatment. Phoolvati's husband Charandas died during the course of the trial.

The nephew of the deceased had lodged the police complaint. Bijendra told the police that accused Satbir had misbehaved with Balakram's wife and had threatened the deceased. Session judge Sarvesh Chandra Pandey, who passed the sentence, has also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on each accused.
