The city traffic police on Sunday flagged off a fleet of 20 shared autos in Vasundhara to benefit intra-city commuters.
The autos will ferry passengers from Maharajpur border to Vasundhara sectors 1 and 4 everyday from 6am to 11pm.
For the past several months, residents’ welfare associations (RWAs) in the area had been pushing for an intra-city shuttle service, especially to the nearest Metro station at Vaishali.
Till now, a trip to the Metro station cost Rs.70 in a three-wheeler. With detailed reports on poor public transport facilities in Ghaziabad, HT has been continuously highlighting the plight of daily commuters.
“The service will definitely benefit thousands of daily commuters who go to Delhi from Ghaziabad. It will also be a respite during summers when waiting in the sun for public transport is a nightmare,” said Vandana Chaudhary, a resident of Vasundhara’s Sector 4.
According to residents, the service will also improve connectivity to surrounding areas.
“To make the journey safer for women, all autos will be monitored regularly. We will also submit details of all drivers at the local police station,” said superintendent of police (traffic) Kiran Yadav.
While some autos will ferry passengers from Vasundhara Sector 1 via Hindon Bridge to Lal Kuwan, the second route will connect Maharajpur border to Vasundhara Sector 1.
After a month, Yadav said, more routes will be added if needed.
