The elite special cell of the Delhi Police, sources claim, has been roped in to keep an eye on the four other gangrape accused lodged in Tihar Jail.
Though senior officials from the special cell refused to comment on the matter, they did concede to having been engaged in gauging the threat perception around the four men.
“When they arrived at Tihar, we were asked to keep using our resources to ensure their safety inside and this exercise is still continuing,” said a senior officer requesting anonymity.
“Though the jail has its own administration and personnel, we have also been asked to chip in with periodic reports concerning the probability of any possible attempts on their lives,” he added.
According to sources, Vinay Sharma, Mukesh Singh, Pawan and Akshay Thakur are being kept under constant vigil by around a dozen special cell personnel in plain clothes.
The exercise has received an added impetus after the mysterious death of the main accused in the case, 33-year-old Ram Singh, inside his own jail cell this Monday.
Singh was found hanging with an improvised rope tied to a horizontal bar inside jail number three around 5.45am. His body was cremated by his family at their native Karauli village in Rajasthan on Tuesday.
Two enquiries into the incident — one ordered by the Tihar Jail administration and another ordered by the Delhi Government — are currently underway.
