Danseuse, scholar and choreographer Anita Ratnam is scheduled to render the Ramayana through storytelling and dance at the Celebrate Story Festival being held at the Central Park here on June 23.

She will be among 20 well-known storytellers, musicians and other artists from the US and other countries who are to share stories from the Native American, European, African, and Asian traditions.

Diane Wolkstein, author and master storyteller, organises the free-to-public festival every year.

Ratnam, founder of the Arangham Trust, a performing arts foundation in Chennai, will use the vocabulary of Bharatanatyam and Tamil folk to bring to life the famous epic. Singing, talking and dancing, she will re-tell, in English, the beloved legend of Prince Rama.

Ratnam is recognised as a dynamic danseuse who enhances India's culture in the performing arts, particularly dance, with an eclectic world view. She has often pushed the traditional perimeters of Indian dance and theatre, through trans-cultural collaborations with sculptors, painters, writers, directors, poets and musicians.

She has won numerous awards including the Nrityakala Shiromani, the Lalithakala Ratna, Natya Ratna and Bharatha Kala Rathinam.
