After a day full of drama and ambiguity, Life of Pi actor Suraj Sharma has finally been cleared to sit for his first semester exams by St Stephen's College.
Sharma, who did not have the requisite 66.6% attendance to sit for the exams, was given a special chance earlier in the semester to
make up for the low attendance by submitting extra assignments in lieu of the classes he missed.
He, according to college authorities, failed to do so. While he submitted the regular assignments, the extra assignments were not submitted. The college, however, gave him another chance on Thursday and asked him to submit his assignments by 5 pm.
"It is not acceptable for the college to give attendance to students on a whim and that's why we had asked Sharma to submit some extra assignments so that we could compensate for the attendance. Only after evaluating the assignments the college decided to allow him to write his exams," said KM Matthew, bursar, St Stephen's College.
Sharma was present in the college since afternoon, submitting assignments and trying to figure out if he would be able to sit for the exam. He stayed in college till 6 pm and had to leave without his admit card as his assignments were not evaluated till then.
"I have done my part by submitting my assignments. I have nothing against the college. They have helped me as much as they could," said Suraj Sharma in the evening.
The college authorities later confirmed that his assignments had been evaluated and he would be allowed to sit for the exam on Friday. He will also be allowed to take his Hindi exam, which he had missed, in the third semester.
