Stung by the arms licence row in the Sukhdev Singh Namdhari case, the Rupnagar police have decided to re-verify details of arms licences issued in the district.

In a press release issued here on Wednesday, Rupnagar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Inder Mohan Singh directed arms licence holders of the district to get their arms and licences checked from the SHO concerned, submit proof of residence to the police in a week and procure a certificate from the police after recording of entries.

He said if any arms licence holder failed to comply with these directions, the police would recommend cancellation of the licence to the district magistrate.

The SSP said if any licence holder was not available at his residence, his or her close relative could furnish such details to the SHO concerned.

Namdhari, a resident of Uttarakhand, had obtained a licence for his Mauser in 1995 on the basis of an incomplete address in Kurali (SAS Nagar district). Kurali was then part of Rupnagar district.

It is learnt that SAS Nagar police officials visited the office of the Rupnagar deputy commissioner to trace the file related to Namdhari's arms licence.

SSP Inder Mohan Singh said that the Rupnagar police did not have any record about the arms licence of Namdhari as files relating to arms licences were sent to Deputy Commissioner office and all the record of receipt and dispatch of files of the concerned year had already been destroyed.
