H.Kovalainen
Having joined the new Lotus Racing team in 2009, Heikki Kovalainen finished 20th in the 2010 season and his heroic fire-fighting skills at the Singapore Grand Prix earned him the coveted title LG Moment of the Year. In 2011, he raced in the Team Lotus colours and for 2012 will remain with the Anglo-Malaysian team in its new guise of Caterham. Kovalainen made his way into in F1 in 2003 with a test debut, driving a Renault and a Minardi and in 2004, as a member of the Renault Driver Development Programme he assisted with the development of Renault's championship winning R24, adding to his growing F1 experience. In 2006, Kovalainen stepped up to the very pinnacle of motorsport, as Renault's third driver. A series of impressive displays in testing saw him achieve his primary goal, with the announcement that he had been promoted by Renault to a full-time race seat for 2007. The Finn enjoyed an excellent debut season, out-performing and out-scoring teammate Giancarlo Fisichella, becoming the second best rookie of the season, after Lewis Hamilton, with a credible seventh in the standings. These achievements did not go unnoticed with McLaren announcing Kovalainen as teammate to Hamilton for 2008 and 2009, until the announcement of his appointment to Lotus Racing. 2008 saw Kovalainen claim both his first pole position, at the British Grand Prix, and his first race win, at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where he became the 100th driver to win an F1 race.

F1 Pundit
The 'bonkers' business logic of Formula 1 teams

The primary goals of any normal business are to be successful in its field; to add value to the company; and to make a profit. Other strategic goals include building a brand, becoming the market leader or expanding the business into new areas. Joe Saward writes.

F1 needs America to complete global jigsaw

If all goes to plan, this will be a big week for Formula 1 as it returns to the United States for the first time in five years. F1 has failed to break into the US market in the course of the last 30 years, having blown the foundations that were built at Watkins Glen and Long Beach in the 1970s.
