Introduced in 2011, the system allows a driver within one second behind another to reduce the angle of his car’s rear wing while the
leading driver is not allowed to do so.
Record number of overtaking maneuvers were produced as a result but the FIA has decided to not let teams use it at will during practice and qualifying from next year. Only within specified areas or zones on the circuits.
The FIA's chief technical delegate Charlie Whiting has stated that the change has been prompted due to safety concerns by teams about the risk of drivers losing control due to trying to use DRS in as many locations on a circuit as possible.
