The late actor Vivek Shauq played the role of Jaspal Bhatti’s brother-in-law in the TV serial Flop Show for so long that Bhatti’s friends almost began believing that he was family to the comedian. And his demise only means an irreplaceable loss to his onscreen partner.
Says Bhatti, who has worked with Shauq for over 25 years, “Vivek’s parents passed away when he was young. To me, he was like a child, a brother and a friend. I was his parent and he was a teacher, as he was a student. His death means a loss of a great artiste and a spirited human being.”
They worked together in shows like Ulta Pulta and Full Tension apart from doing other stage shows in Delhi and Chandigarh. Shauq, who was working on a project with Rajkumar Santoshi before he passed away following a series of heart attacks, was known to be a man of determination.
“I remember we were shooting for Flop Show in Chandigarh, and the city was under curfew. I kept wondering how he would reach the shoot. But he did. That man was capable of doing anything. I could always count on him. I remember we were recently talking about the screenplays of films… and we began talking about God’s screenplay, which makes all other stories look secondary. In that screenplay, you can’t overact or improvise, and I still remember how he smiled at that thought.”
