Is China’s loss India’s gain?

With Internet search leader Google Inc threatening to exit China over uneasy censorship issues, experts believe a pullout could lead to India gaining from a ramp-up in research and various IT and market services.

As a fast growing economy with a skilled population and a knowledge economy offering intellectual property protection, India is seen as a strategic alternative.

“A strong and vibrant democracy, ease of doing business and robust legal systems will continue to offer India an edge over China for a long time,” says Kapil Dev Singh, country manager at industry research firm IDC India.

However, a lot remains in the realm of speculation. Diptarup Chakraborti, principal research analyst at global IT industry researcher Gartner, said it was “highly unlikely” Google exited China as it was deep entrenched.

“It is present in operating systems, mobile, cloud computing and online forms just one part of it operations,” he said. “India is an important market for it but China is more important.”
