Remakes are dicey business. Comparisons to the original are inevitable. Never mind the fact that the original was ‘inspired’ by The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. Anyway, to cut to the chase, the Satish Kaushik-directed and T-Series-produced Karzzzz has evoked a mixed response.
Bhushan Kumar of T-Series had sold the film to Reliance and made a neat profit before the release itself.
As for Reliance, it released the film with as many prints as it possibly could. However, the film failed to open to full houses due to the fact that there were far too many screens and shows.
Good and bad
On the upside, Karzzzz opened very well at the single screen theatres across the country but not at the multiplexes. The initial collections were best in Mumbai and in parts of Gujarat, Saurashtra, U P, Rajasthan and Punjab.
In Mumbai, the remake opened with 40 to 50 per cent at multiplexes. The collections increased marginally for the evening shows.
At the single screen theatres, the collections registered an improvement during the weekend.
All pros and cons considered, the film will be a safe proposition, but a long run is ruled out. It doesn’t have a strong opponent right now.
Jagmohan Mundhra’s Shoot On Sight and R D Mallik’s Cheenti Cheenti Bang Bang have failed to draw audiences.
There were some expectations from Shoot on Sight but that’s it. The negative reviews also came as a dampener for Mundhra.
Even though producer-director Atul Agnihotri and distributor Percept Picture Company of Hello have been proclaiming that the film is a success, the trade thinks otherwise. As a matter of fact, the number of shows have been reduced drastically in the second week.
The collections of Sanjay Gadhvi’s Kidnap and Goldie Behl’s Drona have been laughable.
