The central government will allot a flat to the family of the 23-year-old girl who was gang-raped and brutally assaulted in a moving bus in Delhi last December.

Sources said a middle income group (MIG) flat built by Delhi Development Authority (DDA), costing around R50 lakh, would
be allotted to the family. The flat would be allotted from the 'vacant pool', sources said.

The family would be provided a flat in Dwarka and currently they are being shown different options in the area to choose one, sources said.

Though it is yet not clear which department would foot the bill for the flat, sources said it is likely that the Delhi government would bear the cost for providing the flat. The proposal has been sent by the Urban Development ministry for cabinet approval.

The issue of allotting a flat for the victim's family, which hails from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, had come up during a visit by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi earlier this month to their residence.

The girl, a paramedic student, was gang-raped by six people, including a juvenile, and brutally assaulted on December 16, triggering a massive nationwide uproar.
