You have to wait for at least a year to enjoy travelling by Delhi Metro and high speed airport link metro with a single ticket or smart card. This will be the key for making the express line popular among the domestic air travelers.

Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely told Hindustan Times on Saturday: “Inter-operatibility between trains of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Airport Expressline is a must, to make the new line successful and viable. We are working to bring a multi modal transport system in place and this will be a reality by early next year. This will not only facilitate single token journey between two metro networks, but also between metro and bus service.”

“Inter-operatable ticketing system made express line metro services highly successful in other countries where the airport link metro facilities are available. We, along with the DMRC are also working to put a similar system in place. Once it is functional, ridership of airport bound local travelers will shot up. Presently we are expecting daily ridership of 50,000 passengers which will subsequently just go double,” Lalit Jalan, CEO and director, Reliance Infrastructure Ltd, told HT.

As per the research and development conducted by Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt. Limited (DAMEPL), 70% of the total commuters will be domestic air travelers.

“As most of the domestic airlines have shifted to Terminal 3 of the IGI Airport, it will soon be a trend for domestic air travelers to use express line metro which will be less time consuming, hassle-free and cost effective for them,” Jalan said.

Jalan further added: “We want to make arrangements with DMRC so that commuters can travel in both metro networks with a single token. Our automatic fare collection machines are designed accordingly. DMRC will have to upgrade their system to enable the single token system.
