They had an unusual modus operandi, but couldn’t evade arrest any longer. The South District Police apprehended Rajesh (32) alias Raja and Dheeraj (24) alias Rakesh — two reckless chain snatchers who allegedly targeted female victims during morning hours from Vivekananda Marg in South Delhi on Tuesday.
The assailants mainly targeted ladies who were on morning walks or those dropping their children at school bus stops, police said.
Keeping in mind various instances of chain snatchings in the Delhi and NCR area, the police had constituted a team to investigate the matter, police said.
Acting on information gathered by sources, the special staff of south district laid a trap near the Kashmiri Market T-point on the pretext of conducting security checks of vehicles coming from the Ring Road side, police said.
During the exercise, two persons on a motorcycle were stopped but attempted to evade arrest. They were then overpowered and arrested, according to police.
During interrogation, both the accused allegedly confessed to having being involved in more than 20 cases of chain snatching in the Delhi and NCR area. On further investigation, Rajesh confessed to have been involved on more than 10 cases of various crimes over a period of more than 10 years, police said.
A resident of UP, Rajesh came to the Capital with his brother in 1991. He turned to crime for easy money.
