BJP’s national campaign head Narendra Modi is likely to participate in the electioneering for the assembly elections in Delhi. Sources said a majority of BJP leaders want Modi to campaign in the city.
“A major public rally will be held in the last week of September which will see all senior BJP leaders. Narendra Modi will be a part of it and will interact with the public and booth-level workers to ensure the party’s victory,” said a senior leader.
The Delhi BJP has already requested Modi to give his time. Navjot Singh Sidhu will also canvass for the party actively.
Delhi election incharge Nitin Gadkari, sources said, was happy with the participation of all BJP workers and leaders and has asked them to connect more with the public.
At a marathon meeting, held on Tuesday to discuss the campaign, nearly 110 BJP leaders deliberated upon several issues.
“In the last MCD elections, the state BJP unit had highlighted corruption. This time, too, senior leaders have suggested that there is an urgent need to focus on one or two key issues affecting people and organise awareness campaigns to connect with them,” said a senior BJP leader.
Sources said some leaders suggested making price rise the main issue, especially in the wake of inflated onion prices, and the failure of the government to address the problem. “However, many felt that the safety of women, especially after the 16 December gang rape case, had become a major issue. Some leaders suggested this should be transformed into a campaign over the coming weeks. Suggestions were made to put up hoardings and posters at various strategic junctions to reach out to people,” said another leader.
Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel gave a presentation on the work undertaken by the party in Delhi and said BJP needed to tap young voters.
The issue of infighting was once again raised with one senior leaders pointing out the need of having better management and communication between political colleagues who often do not interact much.
