A 27-year-old man, working as a contractual employee at Tihar Jail, was arrested for allegedly 'assisting' an undertrial prisoner's extortion bid, the police said.
Arun Kumar, a resident of east Delhi's Karawal Nagar, working as a compounder at the jail, had collected extortion money
from the manager of a Ghaziabad-based businessman on the directions of a jail inmate Amit Shukla, said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, DCP (special cell).

"The arrest was made on information that some gangsters lodged in Tihar were orchestrating criminal activities from behind bars through their associates," said DCP Yadav.

According to police, investigation revealed that Amit Shukla was one such jailbird to have called a businessman over the phone and asked him to pay Rs. 50,000 failing which he would be implicated him in a false criminal case.

On January 24, Rajender Saraf, the complainant himself, got a case of attempted extortion registered with the Delhi Police crime branch which was subsequently transferred to the special cell for investigation.
