The Hindustan Times Fitter Mumbai campaign is very inspiring. I am 21. After finishing my graduation this year, I started working and pursuing my higher studies simultaneously. I used to go to the gym regularly in 2006 but discontinued soon after. I became lazy and stopped enjoying my workouts. I started putting on weight. This was very upsetting. I hated being out of shape. I thought of rejoining a gym several times but doubted if I could manage it with work and studies.
But reading Hindustan Times’ Fitter Mumbai articles featuring dedicated people who workout daily, has really inspired me.
I have recently joined a gym near my locality. I work out from 6.30 am to 8 am. My mission is to achieve overall fitness and a toned body by the end of this year.

My colleague pushes me to work out, diet
I love those reminder notes you pin in between the newspaper’s pages. I am a 23-year-old software engineer. I had always tried to be regular with my workouts during my college days but due to my lackadaisical attitude I could never go to a gym for more than a week. My lifestyle got worse with long hours spend on the computer and no physical exercises. I also began to skip healthy meals and instead ate pizzas.
This resulted in fat accumulation on my stomach. Finally, I started going to a gym along with a colleague who ensures that I don’t skip. Since, we work at the same office, he also keeps an eye on my diet. He has a good physique and the credit goes to his determination.

After a health scare, I go for walks, do yoga
For the past 25 years my stressful job has kept me away from home food. I often ended up eating junk and oily food.
However, earlier this month, a routine medical check-up showed that I had high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The doctor advised that I undergo a two-dimensional echocardiography and stress test when the ECG (electrocardiogram) report was unsatisfactory. Worried, I took both the tests. The results were normal. I was relieved. But this incident made me realise how important good health is.
Now, I follow a healthy diet. I also go for morning walks and follow it up by few hours of yoga.

Watch your diet, start young, stay fit
A wise person had once said that when you are young, you use your health to chase your wealth, when you are old, you use your wealth to buy back your health. Difference is that it’s too late. One has to start remaining fit right from a young age by doing regular exercises, yoga and introducing good food habits in the daily routine. Parents should inculcate good food habits and introduce children to sports.
The sedentary lifestyle of modern days with growing fast food intake has ruined the health of both — the young and old. The main killers are heart diseases, which are on the rise due to high levels of stress, incorrect food habits and lack of exercise. This can be kept in check by regular blood tests and nonintervention tests of the heart after the age of 35. Wake up Mumbai before its too late.
