To mark their protest against route allotments to private transporters under political pressure in violation of transport policy, the Joint Action Committee of Punjab Roadways employees held a march in the city and raised slogans against the state transport department on Tuesday.
workers led by convenor of the committee, Amrik Singh Gill, started their march from a local bus stand and passed through BMC chowk, New Courts and reached the office of regional transport authority (RTA) and submitted a memorandum of their demands to them.
"In the past few months several permits have been issued by the transport department under political pressure against the transport policy. At certain places, permits of Roadways buses have been cancelled to accommodate private contractors," Gill said adding that, "We demand that permits should be issued as per the transport policy and both private and Roadways should be given equal timings at counters of bus stands."
"The transport department, in order to please their political bosses, has been putting the interests of Roadways employees on the stake and we will not tolerate this injustice," Gill added.
"If the government fails to cancel the private permits issued in excess and time-tables are not revised immediately, we will launch state-wide protests and on September 2 and 3, demonstration will be held at the bus stands of Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana."
