Shiromani Akali Dal vice president and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee executive member Karnail Singh Panjoli on Sunday opposed the appointment of Joginder Pal Singla as the chairman of district planning committee, Fatehgarh Sahib.

Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal announced Singla's appointment on Saturday.

Perturbed over Singla's appointment Panjoli faxed letters to Punjab CM and Shiromani Akali Dal's president Sukhbir Badal on Sunday. Panjoli said the state government should reconsider its decision.

He said there is resentment amongt the SAD workers of the area about the news of Singla's appointment.

Panjoli was a close confidant of former SGPC president Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra and now close to SAD general secretary and former MP, Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra.

The  Punjab government on Saturday appointed former president of municipal council, Mandi Gobindgarh, Joginder Pal Singla as the chairperson of district planning committee of Fatehgarh Sahib.

Singla, who was the treasurer of Punjab Congress Committee joined SAD in presence of the party chief Sukhbir Badal in Mandi Gobindgarh last year.

Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday gave his nod for Singla's appointment under clause 3 and sub-clause 6 of Punjab District Planning Committee Act, 2005.

Singla's family was associated with the Congress since past 50 years.

Punjab Ratan Awardee Singla belongs to a traditional Congress family that had rich legacy of politics, social welfare and industrialism.

When contacted Panjoli he confirmed that he had faxed a letter to Punjab CM and deputy CM. He said he is personally not against Singla but he wants to see a senior 'Taksali' Akali leader on the post, who has a SAD background.

He said he will meet CM and SAD president soon and  requested him to withdraw their deicison. He said Taksali workers approached him and protested against the decision and added that the post  should be given to people who had sacrificed for the party.
