In the case of suicide by a gangrape victim from a Patiala village, the police have registered a new first-information report (FIR) in Samana, the town where she had consumed poison on December 26. This technical change would render the FIR registered with the Ghagga police station cancelled in
    effect.

The fresh FIR was registered on the orders of additional director general of police (ADGP), crime, Jaswinder Singh, who is heading the probe. The Ghagga station house officer (SHO) had written to the ADGP through the senior superintendent of police (SSP) for the change of place of FIR.

The FIR names Balwinder Singh, Gurpreet alias Aman, Sandeep Singh, Shinderpal Kaur and since-suspended assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Naseeb Singh under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) among other charges.

The victim had killed herself following police inaction, as not only was the rape FIR registered on November 27, two weeks after the crime in Badashahpur village, the accused and the police continually harassed the victim. In fact, the alleged rapists were arrested only after the girl died in a Patiala hospital on December 27.
