Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand via Super Over after the opening Super Eights match of the ICC World Twenty20 ended in a tie in Pallekele on Thursday. Chasing New Zealand's 174 for seven, Sri Lanka managed 174 for six, to send the match into a Super Over. In the Super Over, Sri
Lanka scored 13 runs but New Zealand could only manage six.

Earlier, New Zealand captain Ross Taylor won the toss and elected to bat against Sri Lanka in the World Twenty20 Super Eights.

Sri Lanka finger spinner Ajantha Mendis was declared fit from a side strain and replaced left-arm spinner Rangana Herath.

Mendis missed the group game against South Africa after he was injured during his staggering record performance of 6-8 against Zimbabwe.

Sri Lanka also included 18-year-old offspinner Akila Dananjaya for his debut in place of opening batsman Dilshan Munaweera.

Martin Guptill returned for New Zealand after recovering from a hamstring injury which forced him to miss the group match against Pakistan. He replaced fast bowler Adam Milne.
