US authorities on Monday charged Dzhokhar Tsarnaev with using a weapon of mass destruction against people and property, which could get him the death penalty if convicted.
Tsarnaev was informed of the charges in court proceedings by his bedside at a Boston Hospital where he is recovering
from multiple gunshot wounds, including one in the neck.
Tsarnaev was also read his rights at the proceedings, given three state-assigned lawyers. He said “no” when asked if he could afford a lawyer to defend himself.
To most other questions he responded with a nod or the shake of his head.
“I find that the defendant is alert, mentally competent and lucid,” said the magistrate Marianne B Bowler.
Tsarnaev will be prosecuted by US assistant attorneys Aloke S Chakravarty and William Weinrub.
In an affidavit filed in support of the complaint containing charges brought against Tsarnaev, the FBI lays out in minute details the bombings and manhunt that followed.
Dzhokhar is seen, as captured on videos, “seen apparently slipping his knapsack on to the ground.” Another camera. from the opposite side, showed the knapsack lying at his feet.
He walked away “calmly” after the first explosion.
In another detail, elder brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev alone snatched a Mercedes SUV on Thursday evening. He told the driver, “Did you hear about the Boston explosion?”
“I did that,” Tamerlan said.
The FBI also found Dzhokhar’s black jacket and white baseball which he is seen wearing in the visuals, in his dorm room at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.
