It happened when overnight rain had wetted all the trees lined across my house. The electricity transformer positioned there was peeping through the hanging twigs, with the morning wind swinging the branches.

I was standing in the balcony trying to steal those moments of ecstasy.
With my eyes moving slowly along the horizon, I saw a crow landing on to a support beam of the transformer. Just as it touched the beam, it appeared to rattle intensely before falling to the ground.

The rain had resulted in moistening of the cable and the insulators on the transformer had failed to fully justify their installation. I felt so bad for the bird, fearing that it had all but gone. Just then I saw birds of different species flying out from the surrounding trees and converging around the fallen crow. I was able to spot a couple of parrots, pigeons and 'mynas', apart from the crows forming a ring around the bird.

The chirping and shrieking of the birds went on for about a couple of minutes before I saw a ruffle in the feathers of the presumably dead crow. Perhaps the spirited support from the rest of the birds vanquished the deadly shock and life emerged victorious.

The sight got etched onto my mind, drawing comparisons between humans and animals. We, with our consciousness and conscientiousness written large onto our morphed faces, would not spare even a second for a fallen human.

Just then a loudspeaker from a religious place came alive, leaving me wondering whether we, as a society, had learned anything from the daily blaring coming from God's own place.
