Gokulashtami celebrations have become the latest victim of swine flu.

For the first time, political parties have called for cancelling dahi handi celebrations in the state.

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray appealed to people to celebrate Janmashtami at home, party spokesperson Neelam Ghore said.

Thackeray said health was the first priority and “we should restrain from indulging in big celebrations to avoid crowds.”

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has instructed his cadre to cancel all their dahi handi celebrations in the state.

MNS leader from Dadar Prakash Patankar has decided to distribute 50,000 masks to the revellers. “It is an attempt to save the people from this infection,” said Patankar.

Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal met mandal organisers and appealed to them to celebrate a low-key Ganeshotsav.

“People across the world are amazed by the way people bond during the Ganesh festival. People should avoid gatherings and stay at home. Television channels can beam live aartis,” he said.

Bhujbal also appealed to Muslims to not gather in large numbers during the festival of Ramzan.
