The Little Master may've made his way out early at the India-Bangladesh match on Saturday, but he's firmly footed on the fashion field. Thirty-seven-year-old Sachin Tendulkar's World Cup jersey number 10 has become a rage among youngsters, and is flying off shelves like hotcakes.
"Sachin's number 10 jersey is the most popular. All the jerseys and tees we've manufactured for training camps have the number 10 logo, as that's what's most in demand," says Taran Malhotra of Ludhiana-based Ankita Impex, one of the manufacturers of World Cup jerseys in India.
They have been given an order of 1 lakh T-shirts with the number 10 logo alone, by the Indian team jerseys' official retailers, Pantaloons. For other teams such as Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka, the number of units ordered for is a mere 5,000 each.
"Around 400 jerseys are going off the racks everyday, and number 10 rules them," says Sanjay Ramakrishnan of Myntra.com, an e-commerce portal that is selling the official team India jersey.
It's not just retail chains, but also flea markets that Sachin's number is taking over. "Everyone comes looking for 'Sachinwala' T-shirts here," says Nand Singh, a shop owner in Sarojini Nagar, which sells locally manufactured sports jerseys. "Baakion ko to kum hi poochhtein hain (Hardly anyone asks for other players)," he adds. "Is saal to Sachin ka bhoot chhaya hua hai. Pehle Beckham bikta tha, ab sirf number dus (This year, Sachin's a big rage. Earlier, footballer David Beckham was a hit, but now, it's only number 10)," says Rajkuvar, a shopkeeper in Palika Bazaar.
The reason behind the enormous figures, feel producers and store owners, is that this is speculated to be the Master Blaster's last World Cup. "This is Tendulkar's last year, and I’ve already bought four such tees. God knows when I'll get them next," says Kunal Malhotra, a Bsc student of Delhi University. "I can't believe Sachin is going. We have to wear our support on the sleeve!" says Nimmi Sen, a 24-year-old artist. Second on the popularity chart after Sachin is Dhoni's number 7.
