A group of NGOs have demanded immediate implementation of the Justice Srikrishna Commission report related to the communal violence that rocked Mumbai in 1993.

The NGOs have drawn attention to the fact that policemen who were found guilty by the panel not only went free but also have been
promoted over the years.

Farooque Mhapkar, a riot victim, said those responsible for the carnage, including a section of the Mumbai police, have not been prosecuted while false cases were slammed against him in view of his fight for justice.

He demanded that nearly 60 per cent of the cases "closed" by the police should be reopened as per the panel's recommendations and a thorough probe be conducted to identify the culprits.

Mhapkar and advocate and activist of 'Nirbhay Bano Andolan' NGO, Shakil Ahmed, blamed the system for not bringing to book a number of political leaders, particularly those of Shiv Sena who had been named by the Commission.

The NGOs also ridiculed the assurance of Maharashtra CM Vilasrao Deshmukh and the Centre to set up fast-track courts to implement the Commission's recommendations.
