If in Michael Schumacher's halcyon days with Ferrari anyone dared to suggest that that there would come a time when an opponent, much less a teammate, would outperform the German ace, the person would 101 times out of 100 get a sarcastic reply, "Yeah, and the Boston Red Sox will win the World
Irony, or co-incidence, but months after Schumacher won his record seventh and final world championship the Red Sox ended their 86-year wait. Last season Mercedes GP's Nico Rosberg outscored his veteran teammate, getting 140 points to his compatriot's 72. "It is a nice feeling (outscoring Schumacher) and very important to me. But, what's more important is winning a race soon. That's what I'm focusing all my energy on," Rosberg told HT in an interview. Excerpts.
What do you make of comparisons with your father?
At the beginning of my career a lot of people compared me to my father, which is something I didn't really like nor did I think it was fair. Thankfully now they see me as separate person, not just the son of a former world champion.
Your thoughts on last season?
It was my best season. I'm very lucky to have a teammate like Michael. He is the greatest driver of all time, and I learned a lot from him. To be able to beat him, that's just great.
How is Schumacher as a team partner?
We have good relationship. We think in the same direction when it comes to set up and developing the car.
After a year and a half at Mercedes are you happy with the progress?
We are not where we want to be - on top. There is still come catching up to do if we want to match the front-runners. But, I have faith in the team. Ross Brawn (Mercedes Team Principal) and Norbert Haug (Mercedes boss) have had a lot of success in F1.
Away from the F1 circuit what do you do to unwind?
I love to spend some time with my friends and family. I love to host kitchen parties with my friends or play backgammon. I also like competing in triathlons.
What are your expectations from Indian GP this year?
It's going to be a great experience. I have never been to India, so I'm really looking forward to it. It would also love to spend some time off the racetrack. I want to visit the hills in the Himalayas. If I get the time I'll go there.
