Henna being applied on the hands of a woman as she readies for 'Karva Chauth' in Allahabad.
With Karva Chauth on Tuesday, mehendi has become the new gold! And, while the mehendi prices double up or sometimes even triple around this time every year, we dug into the popular mehendi hotspots in the city and here’s what we found!
While applying mehendi (on a single hand) may cost anything between `50-100 on an ordinary day, a week before this special day the rates soar as high as `500-1,000. “Hum Karva Chauth se pehle waali raat `100 se start karte hain aur kareeb `1,000 tak ki mehendi lagate hain (The rates begin from `100 on the night before the festival and go as high as `1,000)”, says Anil, a mehendi waala from Gurgaon.
Justifying why the rates increase, Anil of Vikas Mehendi Art from Daryaganj says, “We get only a few occasions to make money. Since mehendi is more about fashion than tradition, people don’t mind paying more.”
With the festival being a ‘ladies special’, several mehendi get-togethers and parties are hosted around town. Women invite friends and family over, where a mehendi waala is called too. “Humare paas clients hai jo humein mehendi partiyon ke liye bulate hain. Package `2,100-`15,000 tak hota hai. (Clients call us for mehendi parties. Our package starts from `2,100 and goes up to `15,000),” says Chinu, a mehendi waala from Lajpat Nagar.
“Mehendi is a huge point of discussion on this day. Since we all want to look our best, we don’t mind paying more,” says Shruti Khanna, a housewife. Beauty parlours and salons too offer special beauty packages for this day, and they include mehendi art. “Clients feel relaxed when they put mehendi in a parlour as it’s more comfortable,” says Anita Sahni, who owns a parlour in Ghaziabad.
So, have you buckled down to mehendi mafia yet?
