Mango, the taste of India
It’s the season of mangoes — a good reason for all the lovers of the king of fruits to go bonkers!
To satiate their cravings for the sweet delight, the city will play host to an International Mango Festival. The festival, hosted by Delhi Tourism, is held every year at Dilli Haat for the past 25 years. It showcases varieties of mangoes from different parts of India.
“It is an eagerly awaited annual event, wherein the fruit is celebrated in different forms. Mango is loved and enjoyed by all, and Delhi Tourism is pleased to organise such a festival every year,” says Sudhir Sobti, spokesperson for the festival.
The festival was first organised in the year 1988 in association with Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, in the Mango Orchards of Saharanpur wherein a large variety of mangoes were showcased for public viewing.
The Mango Festival in Delhi features 500 varieties of mangoes, followed by a mango eating competition for men and women. There are also some fun games for kids, a mango quiz, a slogan writing contest, a demonstration on preparation of mango panna and squash, and cultural programmes every evening by the Sahitya Kala Parishad and Punjabi Academy. It also houses stalls for the sale of fresh mangoes and mango-based products.
