The city is likely to get its second dedicated police station to deal with increasing cases of cyber crime.

Confirming that the proposal has been sent to the government for approval, additional commissioner of police (crime) Niket Kaushik said, “The idea is to ease the load on the cyber police station at the Bandra Kurla Complex.”

Currently, while the cyber police station at BKC handles the cases, the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) located at the Mumbai police headquarters provides expertise and co-ordinates with agencies outside the state and country.

A special cell in the special branch has been asked to monitor the web, including social networking sites, with no powers to investigate any case or block the sites.

According to sources, the BKC cyber police station received over 2,700 applications for complaints last year, of which only 200 were filed. While most complaints were re-directed to local police stations, FIRs were lodged only in 63 cases.

“Most cases remain unsolved as the local police stations don’t have the expertise to look into cyber offences,” said sources.

Once the proposal gets approved, the police station is likely to come up in the traffic training institute compound in Byculla.

“While the BKC cyber police station will handle offences occurring in the suburban districts, the Byculla cyber police station will handle cases from Mahim to south Mumbai region,” said sources.

The BKC cyber police team will report to the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (crime) for the suburbs, and the Byculla cyber police team will report to the DCP (crime) for the city.

Both the DCPs report to the additional commissioner of police (crime), who is headed by the joint commissioner of police (crime).

The organisational structure of the Byculla cyber police station would be similar to the BKC cell, where a senior inspector is assisted by four inspectors, other junior officers and constables.
